Houston Texans have placed tenders on kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn and outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett.

Houston Texans front office and general manager Brian Gaine have made an emphasis on retaining their young players and continuing to improve the team. With a lot of cap room in place, Gaine has placed a tender on kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn and outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the Texans’ transactions at the start of free agency.

"The Texans submitted a $3.095 million second-round restricted free agent tender for kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly."

"The Texans also retained linebacker Brennan Scarlett with a $2.025 million original round restricted free agent tender, according to sources not authorized to speak publicly."

These moves made sense as both players played a role in the team’s success in the 2018 season. Fairbairn had an impressive year with the Texans and had a career-high in several statistical categories. He finished the season making 37 out of 42 field goals attempted, completed 88.1 percent of his kicks, and led the NFL in total points scored with 150.

Scarlett also had a good 2018 season before he was placed on the IR with an ankle injury. His versatility was in full display as defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel lined him on as an outside linebacker and moved to him to the inside when injuries began to take a toll to the depth chart.

Scarlett had 18 tackles, 3 pass deflections, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and an interception. His versatility on defense and ability to contribute on special teams made it a no brainer for the Texans to keep him from hitting free agency.
