5 free agents for Houston Texans that are a perfect fit
By Avery Duncan
4. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Los Angeles Rams
2018 stats: 16 games played, 59 total tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 19 quarterback hits.
Some might really be confused by this one. After all, the Houston Texans already have a cheaper and talented defensive tackle in D.J. Reader. Not only would Suh carry a higher price tag, but he’s also been known as a dirty player, and might replace the previously mentioned defensive tackle.
Just two of those three knocks on Suh are true, the lie? He wouldn’t replace Reader because the Texans have slowly converted their 3-4 defense into a 4-3 one.
In case you aren’t familiar with what that looks like, the line set up for the Texans at the end of the season looks like this; Jadeveon Clowney – D.J. Reader – Dunn/Covington/Watkins – J.J. Watt. What might be an issue with that lineup is most of their defensive tackles don’t fit in a 4-3 system that emphasizes quicker players that can get to the quarterback on their own, rather than eat up blocks.
Reader is talented enough to play anywhere over the course of the season, but the others might not be built for it. That is where Suh comes into place, a natural fit as a 4-3 defensive tackle, and a proven commodity.
Adding Suh would undoubtedly help the Texans defensive line rise to the top of the NFL subjective defensive line power rankings. It would be unstoppable, because, seriously, if the Texans are telling Watt, Clowney, and Suh to get after the quarterback, what’s stopping them?
