What has been going on with the Houston Texans this offseason? Where do they stand when it comes to free agency?

The Houston Texans have had a pretty quiet offseason so far in 2019. The biggest move made thus far since their loss in the AFC Wild Card game to the Indianapolis Colts has been the promotion of Tim Kelly to offensive coordinator.

Kelly’s promotion will be a key factor this season for the Texans as it could bring some change and fresh ideas to the offense. At least that is the hope for an offense that seemed to have better days depending on the week played.

Listed below are some news and notes for the Texans from this offseason:

Mark Lane of USA Today’s TexansWire.com wrote about how Steven Nelson of the Kansas City Chiefs could help the Texans. The article by Lane said the following on the cornerback, who is due to be a free agent:

"“Fortunately for Nelson, he had his best season to date during a contract year. Now, with the free agent market being somewhere in the three-year, $20 million ballpark, the Texans know the figures they will have to work with if they want Nelson’s services.”"

The Texans do need a cornerback to possibly replace Kareem Jackson who is a free agent as well, and though he’s more suited at safety, he had to play cornerback as well last season. If Jackson is brought back, many believe he should switch back over to that position, as it is also still unknown if Tyrann Mathieu will return after his one season with the team.

Brian K. Patterson of FanSided’s House of Houston wrote that the Texans need to target free agent offensive tackle Trent Brown of the New England Patriots. The article by Patterson stated about Brown:

"“Yes, he gave up 39 pressures on the season but during the Pats’ trips to the divisional, championship and Super Bowl rounds, he only gave up FOUR pressures and they were all QB hurries.”"

The Texans do need to do something with their offensive line, but the Texans’ best bet is to draft a big-time offensive tackle within the first two rounds of the draft. If I were them I’d take a offensive tackle in the first round and do my best to find on who can be the cornerstone of the o-line for years to come. Though if the Texans want a veteran at offensive tackle, targeting Brown could help the struggling o-line.

•  Sean Pendergast of The Houston Press recently had an article about times the Texans should have used the franchise tag, with one of the players it should have been used on being Glover Quin:

"“This one hurts, not just because the Texans let Quin go, only to watch him turn into a Pro Bowler two seasons later in 2014, but because they backfilled his spot with the absurd signing of Ed Reed.”"

The Texans have a good chance to right the wrong so to speak of losing Quin as he’s expressed interest in returning to the Texans this offseason. They have a need to add at safety, especially if they don’t re-sign Mathieu after he signed a one-year contract with Houston last season.

• Tweet of the Day

The Texans are having fun during the offseason and after the 11-win season and all the sacks quarterback Deshaun Watson took this past season it is well-deserved time off for the franchise QB.

Watson should be able to enter his third year strong as it is apparent the Texans are going to make the changes needed to compete in the playoffs next season.
