Houston Texans: 10 under-the-radar NFL free agent targets
By Avery Duncan
1. Jason Verrett, CB, Los Angeles Chargers
Jason Verrett could easily be the steal of the 2019 free agency due to a sketchy injury history. The 2014 25th overall pick partially tore his ACL in October 2016, had a season-ending knee injury in September of 2017. He also suffered a torn Achilles tendon in July of 2018.
Verrett, a 2015 Pro Bowl selectin, is unquestionably talented though. In 25 career games, the TCU product produced 80 total tackles, 19 pass deflections and five interceptions. In 2014, his Pro Football Focus grade ranked among the leagues best at 85.1.
In 2015, Verrett topped that number earning a gaudy 88.4 grade, and his 2015 coverage grade was also tied for the best in the NFL at 90.9.
Placing fair value on Verrett is tough. Although he is only 27-years old, his medical history will scare away a lot of teams. Yet he still has the talent and ball skills to come back as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
His contract will most likely be a one to two years “prove it” deal with very little guaranteed money due to the hit or miss nature of such an extensive injury history. Still, this is a player who could really help the Texans’ secondary in 2019 and the “risk” is well worth the possible reward.
