Houston Texans: 5 offseason questions need answered
2. Can the secondary be repaired to face tough competition in 2019?
At times, the secondary of the Houston Texans played fine, then at other times, especially when Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts were on the other side of the field … well, there have been much better days. For the Texans to win the AFC South once again, and to advance in the playoffs in future seasons, they must get better at cornerback and re-sign a top safety, too.
We all know Tyrann Mathieu needs to be brought back to the Texans as it will be tough to find another safety as good as him already familiar with the team itself, as he had a productive season in 2018. Even the Texans had two cornerbacks grade in the Top 15 of the Pro Football Focus grades with Johnathan Joseph 10th overall and Kareem Jackson at 13th, but still the overall play of the cornerbacks as a team needs work.
Aaron Colvin wasn’t much help this season, and that is where part of the problem lies as the Texans have a bit of age at cornerback, but also under production in games that really mattered hurt the team this season, too. The Texans have decisions to make on not only Mathieu, but Jackson too, so if they decide to not re-sign Jackson in free agency, look for the 2019 NFL Draft — especially having two second-round picks — as a place to add to their secondary this offseason.
