Houston Texans made couple of practice squad moves
By Jair Lopez
The Houston Texans have a busy week ahead of them as they begin to prepare for their final game of the regular season.
The Houston Texans made a couple of transactions involving their practice squad due to the multitude of injuries that occurred in the defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported that the Texans decided to promote rookie wide receiver Steven Mitchell from the practice squad after veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas suffered an unfortunate Achilles injury in their most recent game. Thomas was placed on the IR in order to open up a roster spot for Mitchell.
The Texans also decided to release inside linebacker Kennan Gilchrist to sign linebacker Chris Landrum to the 10 man practice squad. Gilchrist spent last season on the Texans practice squad and was with the team throughout the training camp and preseason prior to being waived to the start of the regular season. Prior to being to the Texans practice squad, Landrum was with the Los Angeles Chargers after going undrafted in 2016. He played 7 games this season and had six tackles combined.
The Texans still have an open roster spot on the practice squad with Mitchell being promoted to the active roster. The front office along with the coaching staff can conduct workouts to find other young prospects to add the practice squad or sign a player that they have already worked out in the past.
The practice squad, in particular, has seen a lot of turnover since the beginning of the regular season as Texans and the other 31 NFL teams have taken players from their practice squad. Outside linebacker Davin Bellamy and offensive lineman Chad Slade are the only players remaining from the Texans original practice squad.
