The Return of Romeo Crennel as defensive coordinator

In the 2017-2018 season, Romeo Crennel was promoted as the Houston Texans’ assistant head coach and was forced to balance both offensive and defensive playcalling. That season, the Texans went 4-12 and sported one of the worst defenses in the league. Although Crennel’s promotion wasn’t the only reason for this terrible defense, Crennel’s new role as the assistant head coach was partially a reason for this lacking defense.

As the assistant head coach, Crennel was not able to bond and teach his defensive squad. Instead, Crennel received a greater amount of responsibility and bigger control over the team. This led to Crennel losing a strong grasp on the defense. However, with the return of Crennel as the defensive coordinator, he has been able to work his mastery on the defense.

With Crennel as the defensive coordinator, the Texans had one of their best defensive seasons in the 2016-2017 season. Crennel returned to that post this season and has shown why his defense was the best in the league in 2016. Crennel has used his masterful play calling skills and his great experience in his position to lead the Texans to one of the best defenses in the league
