Houston Texans: Ryan Griffin out; time for rookies to step up
The Houston Texans will look to rookie tight ends in Week 7 as Ryan Griffin is inactive on Sunday vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With the Houston Texans announcing that starting tight end Ryan Griffin is inactive for Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team will now look to Jordan Akins and Jordan Thomas who are next on the Texans’ depth chart at the position.
Both Akins and Thomas are rookies this season with Akins being a third round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and Thomas being a sixth round selection in the same draft. Akins is a 26-year old rookie from Central Florida who has nine receptions this season for 89 yards and no touchdowns.

Akins, standing at 6-4, had his best game of the season in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts where he had two receptions for 24 yards including a 14-yard reception in that game. His longest catch this season has went for 18 yards in Week 3 against the New York Giants.
Thomas is a 22-year old rookie, standing at 6-5 and is a rookie from Mississippi State. In six games this season Thomas has four receptions for 91 yards, averaging 22.8 yards per reception.
The rookie Thomas has two receptions or over 25-plus yards this season with a 27-yard reception against the New England Patriots. His career-high catch is a 39-yard reception against the Giants.
These two tight ends should be capable of taking over for Griffin in Week 7. They both bring something different to the table and with Thomas he’s made some big catches this season.
With Akins he’s made some nice plays in limited time too, but it will be interesting to see where they are as the main tight ends this weekend. The Texans should be fine and now we all wait and see what will happen vs. the Jaguars.
