Allen Hurns was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars and is apparently on the Texans radar. During a radio appearance with WFNZ in Charlotte, Hurns stated that the Texans have expressed interest in signing him. This is in addition to several other teams which include the Bills, Jets and Raiders. Houston would be wise to try and sign the four year veteran to bolster their receiving group.

Currently the Texans have two receivers capable of keeping a defense honest. DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller V. Hopkins is the obvious number one target in Houston with Fuller taking advantage of less attention. Adding Hurns to this group would be advantageous for both the Texans and Hurns.

To put it simply, Houston needs more pass catchers. Hopkins and Fuller are nice but more are needed. The sudden but expected retirement of C.J. Fiedorowicz takes away a reliable target. While Fiedorowicz and Hurns do not play the same position, finding someone to take on his workload is a necessity. Surrounding Deshaun Watson with as many receivers as possible is a good decision. For a player as dynamic as Watson it is important to surround him with talent. This will lessen the pressure on Watson to perform and allow him to develop correctly.

In his four seasons Hurns has 189 receptions for 2,669 yards and 21 touchdowns. His best season came in 2015, catching 64 passes for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns. Unfortunately Hurns has failed to live up to his 2015 campaign. A hamstring injury cut Hurns 2016 season short, only appearing 11 games. In 2016 Hurns caught 35 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns. As a result of an ankle injury, Hurn’s 2017 campaign was also lackluster. Appearing in 10 games Hurns caught 39 passes for 484 yards and two touchdowns.

Hurns would be an excellent addition to play next to Hopkins with Fuller acting as the third receiver. Of course there will be concerns about past injuries but that is not exclusive to Hurns. Due to Hurns possible desire to reestablish himself as a legitimate receiver he may take a more team friendly deal to sign with a contender. The Texans certainly appear to be a contender next season and Hurns can be a part of that.
