Texans should target cornerback Jeremy Lane in free agency
At one point it appeared that Jeremy Lane was going to end up in a Texans uniform. Due to a failed physical Lane remained in Seattle and another draft pick was sent to Houston in the deal for Duane Brown. What still remains is the need to upgrade the secondary. Lane has been released by the Seahawks and Houston can sign him to bolster a unit that is in desperate need of help.
The Texans expressed interest in fellow ex-Seahawk Richard Sherman but he never left San Francisco. Signing a three-year deal to remain in the NFC West. Still without a cornerback, Houston can sign his former teammate. Lane would instantly provide youth and talent to a group that was one of the league’s worst in 2017.
Lane was a key contributor in Seattle. Acquiring players who are role players is essential to the development of a team. Not every member of a roster can be a star. There are times when a player needs to play a specific role and Lane is one of those players.
Lane has a pending legal issue. A DUI arrest could limit his playing time in 2018. The real issue at hand is Lane admitted to smoking marijuana before his arrest. This is a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. This could lead to a lengthy suspension and significantly impact his ability to contribute to any team he signs with.
If the Texans take a chance on Lane they would help bring depth to their secondary. Johnathan Joseph is a free agent and is regressing. An addition of Lane could help the Texans navigate moving on from Joseph. Lane would not be the only acquisition but part of group of players to improve the secondary. Depth in the defensive backfield is a must in the modern NFL and Lane can help provide it.
