The Houston Texans have a decision to make in regards to the running back position. Lamar Miller is one of the higher paid running backs in the league and simply put his production does not warrant his current contract. With D’Onta Foreman flashing potential they could look to get out of Miller’s contract and go in a different direction. That direction could be signing running back Dion Lewis.
First things first, the Texans can get out of Miller’s contract which will provide them with more cap room they can use to improve the roster. This includes positions other than running back. But for now the focus here is running back. Lewis will presumably be less expensive than Miller. While Lewis is one year older than Miller he provides a similar skill set that the Texans desire. The ability to run the ball effectively and catch passes out of the backfield.
A combination in the backfield of Foreman and Lewis would be quite a duo. Foreman would be a force between the tackles while Lewis can keep the defense honest with his ability to make plays in and out of the backfield. This would allow the Texans offense to take the next step and help Deshaun Watson in his development. A combination of productive running backs for a second year quarterback will allow Watson to continue to grow. This will be crucial for the Texans next season and in the future.
It must be mentioned that Lewis comes from New England. The Patriots are notorious for how their players are willing to be part of the overall success of the team and not just individual accolades. As a result New England has been one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. Bringing this type of work ethic could take Houston to a level that few expect. This is the type of player that can make the difference over the course of the careers of their younger players. The cultural impact can be felt in the overall performance and success of the team. This is not necessarily a situation where statistics tell the whole story.
If Houston truly wants Watson to reach the next level they must provide him with quality players all over the field. A running back such as Lewis can effectively run and catch the ball. This is the type of player that needs be on the Texans radar. Lewis can be more affordable, provide similar if not better results and bring a winning culture to Houston. This is difficult to pass up for the Texans.
