Former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis has recovered from his surgery. Adam Schefter shared the news through his Twitter account Monday.

With the Texans having a need in the secondary this could be quite the match. The Houston pass defense was among the worst in the NFL last season. Allowing the ninth-most yards through the air per game (237.4) and four-highest quarterback rating (99.5), this unit must improve. Signing Davis in free agency would instantly improve a unit that desperately needs it.

Davis has been one of the more productive cornerbacks in the NFL over the past few seasons. However 2017 was not his best season. As a result of injuries Davis missed 10 games for the Colts. Davis elected to have season ending surgery after re-aggravating an earlier groin injury. Shortly afterwards Davis was released by the Colts. Several teams expressed interest in acquiring the former Pro-Bowl corner before his release. Now that he is cleared by medical professionals he will not be unemployed for long.

There is some risk if the Texans were to sign Davis. There is concern whether the injury could reoccur which would result in more missed time. Concern also exists in regards to Davis’ outspokenness. The Colts left Davis at home for the teams Week 9 contest and Davis voiced his displeasure with the incident. In this situation the criticism of the team is understandable. However his next team should ensure that this does not become a pattern.

It is not out of the question for Davis to end up in a Texans uniform. Houston needs to improve their secondary and certain players are no longer reliable. Davis is only two years removed from a Pro Bowl season. Davis is still capable of being a productive corner in the NFL. Rather than depending on an aging Johnathan Joseph, the Texans should sign Davis. Davis is younger and more reliable. It is time to move on from Joseph and sign Davis.
