As good as Tom Savage has looked, can Deshaun Watson beat him out for the starting job?

There have been reports since the Houston Texans drafted quarterback Deshaun Watson this past April that he’s looked great as he continues to learn their offense.

Texans’ head coach Bill O’Brien had quite the compliment for Watson while talking to the media on Wednesday.

After hearing what O’Brien had to say about Watson, former NFL head coach and current ESPN analyst Herm Edwards believes that Watson will be the Texans’ starter this coming season.

Does Watson really have a chance at beating out veteran Tom Savage?

So far it sounds like Savage has been looking very good this summer as well.

This leads me to believe that the true test for Savage and Watson will be when the lights come on during the Texans’ preseason games.

If Savage looks steady enough during the preseason and doesn’t have a problem moving the ball down the field and putting up touchdowns, I could see the Texans having him begin the season as the starter.

Now if Savage struggles after a few games or gets injured, don’t be surprised if Watson gets the nod over Brandon Weeden because of how far he’s come since being drafted just a few months ago.

Even if Watson doesn’t begin the season as the Texans’ starter, it will also be interesting to see if he at least wins the No. 2 job over Weeden.
