It looks like Tom Savage will be the Houston Texans’ week one starter. Not Deshaun Watson.

Many people believe that Deshaun Watson will ultimately become the Texans’ starting quarterback at some point this coming season.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle was a guest on PFT Live with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio on Tuesday and was asked about the Texans’ quarterback competition.

"“I guarantee you that barring injury, Tom Savage is the opening day starter against Jacksonville at NRG Stadium. Deshaun Watson will watch and learn. And there are only two ways he will get on the field anytime soon. And that is like Dak Prescott.  If the first two go down for the season. Or if the first two play really really bad. He will not be rushed into Bill O’Brien’s system,” said McClain."

This makes sense.

The best thing to do is make sure that Watson is ready to go when it comes to him being comfortable with O’Brien’s offense.

While Savage will likely be the Texans’ week one starter, if he struggles or gets injured during the season I’m having a hard time believing that Brandon Weeden would be a better option than Watson.

Then again it would be better to have Weeden start, than to throw Watson out to the wolves if he’s not ready and hurt his development.

Comment below and let us know whether you believe Watson will play at all during his rookie season.
