. S. 6th Round. TRESTON DECOUD. D

The Texans certainly needed to add a safety in this year’s draft with Quintin Demps leaving as a free agent. But I’m not sure how Treston Decoud is going to help them on anything more than special teams.

Decoud has pretty good football instincts and is a physical player that can help out against the run.

  • But when reading Decoud’s NFL.com draft profile it doesn’t sound like he’s very good in coverage at all.

"Gets behind early when pressing receivers with release quickness off the snap. Backpedals from a narrow base with labored feet. Will lose some balance and body control when forced to transition against in-breaking routes. Takes way too many false steps when attempting to sink and trigger on the throw from his pedal. Doesn’t have the sudden closing burst to defend what he sees in coverage. Had just two interceptions (both in one game) over 104 targets. Play speed is slightly below average. Unable to squeeze routes enough to make quarterbacks uncomfortable from off-man."

If Decoud is going to ever start at safety it would have to be in a defensive system that runs a lot of cover-2 since that would limit his chances of getting exposed in coverage.
