Would the Houston Texans draft DeShone Kizer in the second round?

While the Houston Texans are expected to grab a quarterback in the first round of this year’s NFL draft, the mystery is who will in fact be on the board when they’re on the clock with the 25th overall pick.

North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky is still expected to be the first quarterback taken with Patrick Mahomes not too far behind him.

It now sounds like the draft stock of Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer is falling.

CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora is reporting that Kizer could fall out of the first round of this year’s NFL draft.

"After that tier, there are two other quarterbacks under first-round consideration in Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer and Cal’s Davis Webb, but the sense I get from the scouting community is they are heading in very different directions. Kizer might just slip out of the round entirely with execs not sold on his attitude and maturity, while Webb continues to generate a groundswell of support. It could end up becoming much closer between those two than most would have expected back in September."

La Canfora says the second quarterback to go drafted after Trubisky will be either Mahomes or DeShaun Watson.

"Regardless, after talking to a host of scouts and execs this week, the quarterback debate will begin once Trubisky is off the board. Some teams have Texas Tech’s Pat Mahomes as the top passer on the board, but many of those clubs don’t have a quarterback need and aren’t taking one in the first round this month. Ultimately, the second quarterback taken will come down to Mahomes and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson."

Given the fact that there’s a chance that Mahomes could be off the board before the Texans are on the clock, I wonder if they would decide to go in a different direction with the 25th pick and take a quarterback like Kizer in the second round.

Of course that would be a gamble since there’s no telling how far Kizer will fall if what La Canfora is reporting is in true.
