Houston Texans: 5 players whose stock is on the rise
By Randy Gurzi
3. John Simon, OLB
Last season outside linebacker John Simon started several games in place of the oft-injured Jadeveon Clowney. He recorded five sacks in his pass rushing role and looks to expand upon that in 2016. If this preseason is any indication, he should have no problem doing just that.
On Sunday, Simon was credited with just one tackle, which makes it odd to see him here. That is until you watch the play he made to intercept a pass from Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer. After the tight end blocking Simon lets him go, he wisely sniffs it out as a screen pass.
Instead of turning and trying to stop the receiver, Simon leaps up as the pass is let go and tips it to himself. He’s then able to haul it in, force Palmer to whiff on an attempted tackle and sprint 59-yards for the end zone.
It was the second touchdown of the preseason for Simon, who also scored on a fumble recovery against San Francisco in the first preseason game. The 12 points scored was duly noted by Texans beat writer Drew Dougherty. However, the response by his wife Brittany was even better.
