Johnathan Joseph, Cornerback, 31-years old
The Texans and cornerback Johnathan Joseph did a two-year extension just before the 2015 season, but that doesn’t guarantee he will be on the roster in 2016.
Joseph started all 16 games for the Texans in 2015 and while he recorded a solid 58 tackles, he finished the season with his lowest interception total (1) since the 2008 season while he was still a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.
He was often out of position and looked to have lost a step, which makes it tough considering the young receivers he will go up against with the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars in the same division.
Making matters worse, Joseph’s cap hit is estimated to be at $7 million and the team could save $3 million on the cap this season by letting him go. That money could go towards helping to re-sign their interior lineman who are hitting free agency.
Both guard Brandon Brooks and Ben Jones are free agents and there are no surefire replacements for them on the roster. As for Joseph, the team has a replacement ready to go as their first round pick Kevin Johnson proved to be a quality NFL corner during his rookie season.
