Oregon Ducks. MATT HEGARTY. #6.
With the team’s final pick (they traded their seventh rounder to the Denver Broncos for tackle Chris Clark) they add depth to their offensive line. After seeing injuries along the line at an alarming rate in 2015, the Texans know the value of a player with versatility and that’s why they take a flier on Oregon guard/center Matt Hegarty.

After starting tackle Jeff Adams at left guard the Texans then had to shift right tackle Derek Newton to the same position after Adams was lost to injury. They then used undrafted players and others they signed off opposing teams practice squads as well.

The 6-foot-4 295 pound Hegarty spent one season as the starting center for the Ducks after transferring out of Notre Dame. It was a smart transfer by Hegarty as he understood guard may not be his best bet in the NFL and with Nick Martin entrenched as the Irish center, he wasn’t moving inside there.

Now he was able to show scouts what he could do as the anchor of an offensive line as he held up well for the Ducks. For Houston he serves well as the primary backup center that could play guard in a pinch.
. G/C
