5. Safety
Andre Hal moved from cornerback to safety after being selected in the seventh round of the draft in 2014. While he was relatively quiet at his natural position, Hal took to the move to safety nicely.
By season’s end, Hal recorded four interceptions. He doubled the best output on the team as no one else recorded more than two picks all season.
While Hal gives the Texans hope at one of the two safety spots, the other spot is up for grabs. 2015 free agent acquisition Rahim Moore turned into a healthy scratch by the end of the year and it would be surprising to see him remain a starter on the team.
With little depth outside those two, Houston has to address the safety position in the draft this season. While they don’t necessarily have to address the spot with their first round pick, they need to add some youth and talent to the position that they can work with.
The prize of the draft looks to be Florida State’s Jalen Ramsey, although some have him projected as a corner. With most experts having Ramsey gone in the top five, he would be a pipe dream no matter what position Houston sees him at.
Other players to consider in the early rounds could include Darian Thompson of Boise State, Jeremy Cash of Duke, Vonn Bell of Ohio State and Jayron Kearse of Clemson.
