After a quarterback competition went in his favor, Brian Hoyer is set to start his first regular season game as a Houston Texan. His familiarity with coach O’Brien from their days in New England aided him in the preseason and will serve him well as the games get going.
It’s obvious O’Brien trusts Hoyer, which is why he was brought in. I believe the coach wanted Hoyer to win the job because of this trust and now it is time for Hoyer to repay the man who helped him get his career started back in 2009 when he was an undrafted rookie learning under O’Brien, his quarterback coach at the time.
With Alfred Blue in the lineup because of Foster’s injury it will be tough to rely solely on the running game meaning Hoyer needs to be ready to throw. He looked sharp in the preseason as he made quick reads and accurate passes.
Sunday’s game will prove if that efficiency will carry over into the regular season. If it does, the Texans have a real shot at fighting for a playoff spot this season.
