Both Hoyer and Mallett performed well this offseason for the starting job, but Hoyer was able to come out on top. He showed an ability to take risks, and a real connection with the starting offense. Hopefully, he will be able to prove to the NFL that he is a starting quarterback.

But this has to start with the fans.

As fans of the Houston Texans, I truly believe that we have to trust in our head coach, and support whichever QB he choses to start. There isn’t any positive effect of criticizing Hoyer after watching 15 preseason pass attempts. There just isn’t enough data to make a valid case.

Mallett showed a lot of good traits for a quarterback, and while he may be the backup for now, the opportunity to start could be right around the corner, and I expect him to continue to compete and improve so that some day he gets a shot to show he’s a great QB. But we can’t sit around complaining that he didn’t get the job.

Instead, we as fans should be vocal with our support of our coach, out quarterback, and our team. I’m not saying you have to love the decision, but you have to patient. We don’t know how the season will end. What we do know is that Brian Hoyer is going to start, and in the meantime, we should watch to see what he does with the opportunity.

Chances are, one of those guys might just make an impression on not only the coaching staff, but the fans as well. So give Hoyer a chance. He just might surprise us all.
