Return:

  • Even though starting field position is largely based on defense, I am putting the Texans average field position in the special teams department. The Texans have one of the worst return games in the NFL. Bill O’Brien still hasn’t named a return man for punts or kick returns probably because there is not a great option on the entire team.
  • Keshawn Martin returned the most punts last year on the Texans (25). He averaged 6.16 yards per punt, which was dead last in the NFL. He only had one game where he averaged over 10 yards per return. His best return went for a whopping 21 yards, which was the lowest in the NFL for qualifying return men.
  • Damaris Johnson also attempted to return punts last year but didn’t work either. He averaged six yards per return on his nine returns. He lost his job after week 4 and didn’t return one kick afterwards. This is partially due to him gaining a bigger offensive role.
  • Bill O’Brien is trying out multiple players in training camp in hopes to find a natural return man. Special teams is very important and creating better field position via returns will help a potentially very bad Houston Texans offense.
