Should The Houston Texans Trade For Quarterback Philip Rivers?
News broke last week that San Diego Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers is unwilling to sign an extension with the team. Could the Houston Texans be the next potential landing spot for the 33-year old gunslinger?
Rivers is in the final season of a seven-year, $98.25 million deal he signed back in 2009 with the Chargers. He is scheduled to make a whopping $15.75 million in 2015.
Although the Chargers have denied rumors that they might be looking to trade their star quarterback, according to NFL analyst Ian Rapoport, they haven’t outright said that.
Rapoport also expects it would take multiple first round draft picks in order to acquire the five-time Pro Bowler from the Chargers this offseason.
Last year, Rivers threw for 4,286 yards, 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He has played for the Chargers franchise for the past 11 seasons straight.
The Texans organization has been looking for a starting quarterback of River’s caliber since their inception in 2002. His addition would place Houston on par with their AFC rivals, the Indianapolis Colts.
But is the cost too high? Probably. Multiple first-rounders is a hefty price to pay for a quarterback who could possibly hit free agency next offseason. But the Chargers could simply elect to place the franchise tag on Rivers past this season, essentially forcing him to be their quarterback for the foreseeable future.
But based on his refusal to sign an extension, it appears Rivers wants out of San Diego. Although the Texans would certainly benefit by having him on their roster, right now, I believe the price tag is just too high.
But what do you think? Would you give up multiple first rounders for Rivers?
