Houston Texans: Is Josh McCown The Answer At Quarterback?

facebooktwitterreddit

At this point, any quarterback who has had the slightest amount of success in the NFL is going to be associated with the Houston Texans. It’s the price you must pay when you don’t have a proper franchise quarterback in place.

And that latest quarterback is Josh McCown, who is now on the open market after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday. Could the Texans be the perfect landing place for the wily veteran?

More from Toro Times

Prior to signing in Tampa Bay in 2014, the former 2002 third round pick out of Sam Houston State had experienced a career resurgence as a member of the Chicago Bears. In eight games in 2013, as the primary back-up to starting quarterback Jay Cutler, McCown threw for 1,829 yards, 13 touchdowns and only one interception for da Bears.

But McCown’s success in Chicago turned into epic failure during his one year in Tampa Bay last season. Signed as the top free agent quarterback in 2014, the perennial back-up threw for 2,208 yards, 11 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 11 games for the Bucs. His 56.3% completion percentage was among the lowest in the NFL.

If signed by the Texans this offseason, the soon-to-be 36-year old quarterback would be viewed as simply a stop-gap towards addressing Houston’s bigger issue. They’ll still need to find a franchise quarterback. But signing a veteran like McCown would give head coach Bill O’Brien and his staff more time to do so.

But what do you think? Should the Houston Texans pursue Josh McCown?
