Ryan Mallett had been listed on the Texans injury report but there was no real indication what that injury was. Evidently during the Browns game he pulled or tore his right pectoral muscle. That injury was nagging but during the pre-game was further hurt as per Ian Rapport:

That explains why he was so sub-par against the Bengals. While I admire his grit and determination to play he hurt the team with poor play. It’s a catch-22 on this one. Say something, get benched and never start again or try to fight through the injury and get the win. This could not have come at worse time for the Texans who were trying to salvage their 2014 and now are all but out of the play off picture. The team also has to look ahead to 2015 and the draft as the quarterback position is still a disaster. Fitzpatrick has proven to not be the answer, Mallett showed some amazing play last week that gave everyone hope, but then a lack of awareness this week in going into the game with a right pectoral injury.

Is it time to give Savage the nod and see what kind of player he is? I say yes. A quarterback with a bum arm is worthless, running Fitzpatrick out there is equally useless. Savage has to get his feet wet sometime, you cannot evaluate a quarterback based on classroom answers and practice squad reps. 5 games, if he makes it through all 5 and shows he’s the real deal, next April is that much easier. Fiztpatrick might get a win, but that is a short sighted approach at this point. 2015 and beyond are now the focus. At this point I’d start Tom Savage and let him prove he’s worth keeping or letting him go at the end of the season.

I really liked what we saw out of Mallett last week, and a pectoral tear would explain the horrid day he had. Even if this is something low grade that he might return from in a couple of weeks letting Savage step up is still the right move. I applaud wanting to do “what’s best for the team” as Bill O’Brien likes to answer. Sometimes coach, the best thing to do is think big picture not next week.
