Though there aren’t any games until August with the preseason, there are still plenty of dates we all need to remember as NFL fans this offseason so we are able to keep track of the ever-changing sport known as pro football.

Today (Monday, Feb. 17) is the first day NFL teams can use a franchise tag on a free agent.

That will be followed by one of the most important parts of the draft season … the NFL Combine, as it will take place from Feb. 19-25 in Indianapolis. The Combine airs on the NFL Network.

NFL.com reported:

"“Live coverage of on-field workouts begins Saturday, Feb. 22, with the offensive linemen, tight ends and kickers, and continues with the running backs, quarterbacks and wide receivers on Sunday, Feb. 23, linebackers and defensive linemen on Monday, Feb. 24 and defensive backs on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Coverage of workouts begins each day at 9 a.m. ET.”"

The combine is always fun to take a peek at. It can get a little boring, but it at least gets us all talking about the NFL again.

March 11 will be a big day for all NFL teams with the start of the free agency signing period, including when teams must exercise player options and be under the 2014 salary cap.

Also on March 11, teams in the NFL can also begin to make trades.

March 11 will be a very interesting day … I’m really interested in seeing who the Texans decide to re-sign and what they do with QB Matt Schaub.

The NFL annual meeting will be on March 23-26 in Orlando, Fla. and for April 7, teams that hired a new head coach in the offseason can begin their offseason programs, which directly affects the Houston Texans since they hired Bill O’Brien.

The rest of the NFL can begin their programs on April 21.

The NFL Draft is on May 8-10.

I for one can’t wait for the NFL Draft … I’m very excited to see what not only the Texans do with their No. 1 overall selection, but in what direction other teams in the NFL go. This draft is still a mystery to me as there is still no clear-cut player projected at No. 1 overall.

Training camps dates haven’t been announced, as the last item on the current offseason schedule is the NFL Spring meeting on May 19-21.
