J.J. Watt still believes in Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage.

Now that the Houston Texans have drafted a star quarterback in Deshaun Watson, everyone–including myself–is counting out Tom Savage as the starter heading into the 2017 season.

One person that still believes in Savage is his teammate J.J. Watt.

From John McClain of the Houston Chronicle:

"“He’s had time to learn and grow,” Watt said. “He’s got a chance to prove what he’s got. That’s all you can ask for in this league – an opportunity. I think he’s embracing that chance this offseason.”"

"“He’s working as hard as he can to be the guy,” Watt said. “Everybody around here knows what the goal is, what we have and what we can be. Now it’s a matter of going out and executing it. I think he realizes that. Obviously, we want to create something special here.”"

Despite all the chatter about Watson being able to start as a rookie, Savage will be given every opportunity to remain the Texans’ starter heading into the upcoming season.

Savage certainly has the edge on Watson, since he’s been in head coach Bill O’Brien’s complex offense over the past three years.

While Watson is a smart young player, he’s going to have a hard time catching on to the Texans’ offense right away, which should give Savage time to prove that he can be Houston’s starter.

Whether Savage keeps the starting job will ultimately depend on his ability to stay healthy and win football games.
