After originally selecting Arian Foster’s old number 23, rookie fourth-round pick Tyler Ervin decided to switch to number 34

Not long after the draft ended jersey numbers for rookies started to become known throughout the NFL universe. Once those numbers started becoming available for the Houston Texans rookies, a couple eyebrows were raised.

The reason for that was that the team’s fourth-round pick, running back Tyler Ervin, was assigned number 23. That may seem odd because it wasn’t too long ago that jersey 23 in Houston belonged to the franchise’s all-time leader in every rushing statistic that matters, Arian Foster.

More from Toro Times

Foster was cut by Houston just this past March and for die-hard fans, it may have seemed kind of soon to hand out his number to another running back. Kudos to Ervin for realizing this, as per Tania Ganguli of ESPN, the rookie asked to be reassigned to number 34 after the team’s original assignment.

Per the report, Ervin wants to blaze his own trail in Houston, and not be held to the standards of someone else. She also indicated that 34 may not necessarily be the final number the rookie ends up wearing once the season starts.

As for the rest of the rookies in Houston; wide receiver Will Fuller will wear number 15, center Nick Martin will wear number 66, receiver Braxton Miller was given number 13, safety K.J. Dillon got number 36 and number 98 will be nose tackle D.J. Reader.
