The Houston Texans are gambling on the slim hope that the 2014 season may yet yield post season fruit. Once again the Texans bring Fitzpatrick back to start at quarterback. He’ll be at the helm against the Tennessee Titans this Sunday at NRG Stadium. The Texans placed recent starter Ryan Mallett, on IR for the rest of the season, the result of an upper chest injury suffered around the Cleveland game. This move has not been universally applauded by fans who have seen what Fitzpatrick has to offer and were hoping to see if Tom Savage has the key to the Texans future. Based on this move, the answer will have to wait.

To fill the empty slot in the line up, another former Buffalo Bills quarterback, Thad Lewis. The ties here go back 2006 when O’Brien was at Duck. Lewis played for him as a freshman. How long it will take Lewis to get up to speed remains to be seen. Savage and Lewis will have a chance to prove they are the go to guy should the need arise. This further leads one to believe that Savage is behind the power curve if a stand in with no exposure to the Texans system is getting a chance to be the back up.

On the bright side for Ryan Mallett, although his year has ended the Texans have made it clear they want him back next year. This leads one to believe that should Mallett be healthy Fitzpatrick will be let go in the off season or relegated to a back up role. What this portends for draft remains to be seen. The Texans quarterback situation has returned to where it was at the start of the season with no player on the roster so far showing they have what it takes to be a franchise quarterback. Mallett, will get a second chance here should he choose to sign with the Texans as he enters free agency.
