Texans need to shave the beard and pick up the Mallett

The Texans need to accept it’s time. Time to shave the Beard and pick up the Mallett. Okay that was bad, want better puns?  Tell the Texans to start winning.  While I won’t deny that there are more problems then Fitzpatrick, the ball starts with him.  Over the last 9 games, Ryan Fitzpatrick looked good against two teams. The Oakland Raiders sitting at 0-8.  And the Tennessee Titans who are at 2-6. In those games his stats respectively; 14/19 for 139 yards, no INT and 2 TD and a 92 QBR. 19/35 for 227 yards, no INT, 1 TD and a QBR of 38. Those are his highlights. I get that Fitzpatrick is smart, driven and a really good guy by all accounts. He’s tough, fearless and has a killer beard. Got it. He’s also a big part of why the offense is so anemic and Shane Lechler is on track to set some single season punt records.

When Bill O’Brien came to the Texans, he came in as a man with a plan. A determined coach whose pedigree includes working with Tom Brady and making tight ends into stars. O’Brien knew Matt Schub had lost his mojo. He reached out for the one man smart enough to run the ideal O’Brien offense. Journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick. Many fans were not thrilled as they watched Keenum, Yates and Schaub get released then replaced by a back up whose NFL time has not included any real playing time, the aforementioned Fitzpatrick a man with a near 1:1 TD to INT record and Tom Savage.  A big, raw talent with limited college play.

We gave him hope. We gave him time. We waited. The Texans drafted a physical monster in Jadeveon Clowney who has spent more time watching games then any one fan. We passed on potential quarterbacks in hopes that O’Brien could work magic and teach the bearded wonder how to be his best. The reality is, so far he’s having for him, one of his best seasons ever. One glaring hole in the offense are the tight ends. Garrett Graham, Ryan Griffin and C.J. Fiedorowicz. They have over 7 games with the smartest quarterback to ever take the wonderlic test, a head coach whose game play has up till now been tight end heavy… a sum total of 16 catches for 152 yards. Out of 158 passes 16 have been in the hands of the tight ends.  Let that sink in.

Is there any wonder that Andre Johnson seems to be playing with half effort. It’s like he’s saving his health for a better moment before time catches up with him and his moment is forever gone. Right now the Texans would have to go 7-0 to finish the season with any hope of making the play offs. That means Indy has to lose 3 games between now and December. Let’s face it, the season is all but lost. Why are we wasting time with a man who isn’t the future and failing the present? Bring on Mallet. Bring him on at the dawg pound and let him face the Browns. Give him four games. If he’s that spark, keep him going, if not? Seeing what kind of player you have in Tom Savage isn’t a bad play to finish off the season.

This is about the future now, knowing if next year we have to draft a quarterback or if we need to draft somewhere else. Like corner back, offensive linemen… linebackers. The Texans have this question now to answer to be ready for 2015. Is that a sad commentary on a team that had hopes 2014 could be competitive? It is, however it wasn’t a surprise to Bills and Titans fans who knew what the Texans were getting. You have to question the judgment of Bill O’Brien of ever thinking he could change a 10 year veteran player whose play had always been not quite good enough for prime time, into a player he’ll never be.
