Big news everybody! Jadeveon Clowney was sighted on the practice field! All kidding aside, that is big news. While it is still not a certainty that he’ll suit up and take to the field against the Steelers the odds are looking better everyday. This has to be messing with the Steelers coaches. Watching the film of the Texans last few games it’s obvious to anyone that you double team Watt and just over the others. Clowney messes with that formula in a big way. Of course even if he plays it will be limited action however, I don’t think anyone rooting for the boys in blue will complain.

Head Coach Bill O’Brien made it clear that Clowney’s long term health is the paramount. When asked about the matter he had this to say: “I think when he’s been off for four or five weeks, you bring him back, maybe you play him a certain amount of plays.” How the Texans handled Brian Cushing returning is probably a good guide for how Clowney will see action. I expect by week 11 he’ll be back to full time playing duties barring any unforeseen setbacks.

The other tidbit of interesting news was O’Brien talking about Ryan Mallett’s progress. “I think the other thing you see is that he obviously took some great things from backing up Tom Brady for three years. His command in the huddle, his command at the line of scrimmage, his knowledge of little things within the offense, you can see that. It’s been good to see that.” There has been rumbling among the fans to get Mallett in due to the over all lack of consistent offense, the fact through 6 games Fitzpatrick is ranked 31st out of active quarterbacks in QBR. If the Texans sputter through another ineffective and inconsistent outing on offense those grumblings will get much louder. A loss, and a loss against the Titans will almost certainly force O’Brien to see what Mallett has to offer.
