The Houston Texans wrapped up their mandatory minicamp earlier this afternoon, ending a two-day period of essential training with new coaches and team personnel. This period represents a pivotal opportunity for players and coaches to learn the playbook's ins and outs further and establish rapport for the upcoming season.

For a team that is in year two of a massive rebuild, the first of which with a new coaching staff, the spring serves as a pivotal opportunity to truly set the cultural foundation and establish a system. The Houston Texans not only did that but were able to display early signs of promise on both sides of the ball.

The AFC South is currently in a weak state. Though I don’t personally expect this team to usurp the Jacksonville Jaguars as a potential favorite to win the AFC South, the 2023 Houston Texans certainly don’t lack confidence and swagger. They showed that in spades during the mandatory minicamp period of spring practices.

Impressive displays from the youngsters, an engaged and energized coaching staff, and motivated veteran leadership are a few of the key things that the Houston Texans displayed at their most recent spring practices. Texans fans who are looking for reasons for optimism can confidently come away with their heads high following a highly productive spring session.

Here at Toro Times, we identified key observations from the mandatory minicamp period that serve as promising developments as we approach training camp. Here are three of those observations.

C.J. Stroud getting in work with the first team offense

The promising rookie signal caller’s stock continues to trend upward. Though Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has made clear that Stroud’s turn with the first team is part of an ongoing rotation between him and fellow quarterback Davis Mills, meaningful snaps are still meaningful snaps.

Stroud did not disappoint with his opportunity. Though the 2023 second-overall selection did toss a pick six in the 11 on 11 portions of today’s practices, he displayed equally positive indicators of his arm talent and poise in the pocket, traits that led to his high selection.

Expecting perfection out of a rookie signal-caller is a recipe for failure, but Stroud certainly displayed fewer blemishes in the team period of practice. For a young quarterback, that is no small feat.

The quarterback competition is set to reach its climax with training camp rapidly approaching. Though there is no clear winner based on padless practices, that will change dramatically once the pads come on.

If the 21-year-old can continue to build on his progress in mandatory spring training camp and OTA’s, we can very well see him line up behind center come week one. At this current rate of improvement, that idea may not be as farfetched as some may believe.

The Texans' secondary is making their statement

With motivated veterans and a group of intriguing youngsters, the Houston Texans secondary may prove to quietly be one of the stronger position groups on the team. During the mandatory minicamp period, the unit displayed just how large their potential is.

Backup free safety Eric Murray immediately went to work and made his presence known in the team portion, coming up with a pick-six off an errand C.J. Stroud pass according to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson For Murray and other veteran defensive backs such as the newly signed Shaq Griffin, leading by example is their way of indoctrinating themselves into the team culture and showing the young guys how it is supposed to be done.

With Jalen Pitre and Derek Stingley Jr representing budding young talent in the secondary to go along with veterans Desmond King, Steven Nelson, Eric Murray, and 2023 offseason additions Jimmie Ward and Shaq Griffin, this unit possesses a great deal of depth and balance between youth and veteran experience.

Though no definitive judgment can be made without the pads on, the impressive range and work ethic displayed by the defensive backs thus far generates plenty of excitement. With more time to establish a rapport, this unit could very well be one of the strengths on his Houston Texans roster.

How about those young wide receivers?

The Texans wide receiver room has been the topic of many conversations this offseason and for good reason. The unit features a bevy of young talent that again showcased their skills to the masses during the mandatory minicamp period.

The main three that stood out were rookies Xavier Hutchinson, Tank Dell, and young veteran Nico Collins. Each receiver displayed chemistry and consistency with their signal caller and signs that they are ready to take that next step and provide valuable short-term contributions to their NFL club.

When I was reviewing highlights of the offensive portion of drills one specific play that stood out to me was on a Nico Collins sideline grab. During the play, Stroud was able to connect with Collins through the teeth of the defense for a tough catch. Those two have shown excellent rapport thus far in spring sessions.

The most important characteristic shown by each receiver during these past couple of days was the work ethic and hunger to improve, traits that will serve them well as the offseason activities intensify. For Texans fans, having a group of motivated receivers is an exciting prospect.
