Deshaun Watson: Will the Houston Texans keep their QB?

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson and the only franchise he’s ever played for aren’t in the best terms in their relationship, and it seems one way or another that Watson has worn the Texans No. 4 jersey for the last time.

This past season was the best season of Deshaun Watson’s career as a Houston Texans quarterback, finishing as the passing leader in the NFL, plus just keeping the offense on point, even though as a team the Texans were one of the very worst in the league with a 4-12 record.

We all know about the many roster and front office changes that have led Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson to ask for a trade. With salary cap implications that would affect the Texans, plus their unwillingness to let their franchise quarterback play for another team, right now as things stand either the Texans aren’t giving in to Watson’s trade demand, or Watson will have to call the Texans’ bluff and hold out for as long as he sees fit.

That means Watson wouldn’t be getting paid, but rather fined by the Houston Texans if he were to hold out. That would also mean the Texans would be without a starting quarterback named Watson, but they would still have all of the drama that has been hampering them this entire offseason.

Deshaun Watson won’t be the Texans QB in 2021

Watching from afar and not knowing much about the internal talks of the Houston Texans and Deshaun Watson, the gut feeling with this entire situation is if Watson doesn’t want to be a part of the franchise, then make a trade to improve many aspects of the roster.

Let’s not kid ourselves, the Houston Texans aren’t winning the Super Bowl for the 2021 season, and most likely they aren’t winning the championship anytime soon. Watson can play at his very best as shown from this past season, where he passed for 4,823 yards, with 33 passing touchdowns and just seven interceptions, and well, the results weren’t there for the entire team.

If Deshaun Watson stays — which he reportedly told new head coach David Culley this week he still wants out — the Texans have a chance to be a better team than they do without him in 2021.

That said, the Texans are closer to the bottom of the league standings than they are to the top, meaning many roster changes are going to continue to happen and things will stay down before they can get back to the top of the division.

As the offseason continues and the 2021 NFL Draft gets closer, the overall feeling is Deshaun Watson isn’t playing for the Houston Texans in 2021. That could mean that the draft could be more exciting with first-round picks for the Texans if they trade Watson.

Even the Texans front office isn’t incompetent enough to keep all of the negativity that has happened since the end of Week 17 for the rest of the offseason and the entire 2021 season.

The prediction here is Watson will be traded for a boatload of draft picks, and both the Houston Texans and Deshaun Watson will eventually each have their own success in the future if a trade does happen before the draft.
