Tyrann Mathieu, Earl Mitchell are former Houston Texans in Super Bowl LIV

There will be a couple former players from the Houston Texans who will be playing in Super Bowl LIV this Sunday in Miami.

Though the Houston Texans were two wins short of reaching Super Bowl LIV, this Sunday will feature two former Texans defensive players with Tyrann Mathieu playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Earl Mitchell being a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

Both players weren’t re-signed by the Texans during this past offseason, with Mathieu playing only one season with the Texans, but when he was with Houston he made an impact on the defense, especially the secondary.

While a member of the Texans (he played his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals) in 2018, Mathieu played in all 16 regular-season games where he totaled 89 tackles (70 solo), with three sacks and one fumble recovery. That season, he also had eight passes defensed and two interceptions.

In his lone playoff game with the Texans, he totaled eight tackles in what was a loss against the Indianapolis Colts.

This season as a member of the Chiefs, Mathieu also played in all 16 regular-season games where he totaled 75 tackles (63 solo) with two sacks, four interceptions and 12 passes defensed. In two playoff games, the safety has 12 total tackles (nine solo) with three passes defensed.

More than just his numbers, he helped Texans secondary greatly with the younger players on the roster, especially safety Justin Reid during his rookie season. That help and leadership will pay dividends for many seasons ahead for Reid, and the Texans should be grateful Mathieu was on the roster for Reid’s rookie season.

Mitchell played for the Texans from 2010-13, where he missed just one regular-season game in four years in Houston. Since then, Mitchell played three seasons with the Miami Dolphins and since then he’s with the 49ers.

Mitchell has only played in the two playoff games with the 49ers this season, but in the NFC Championship he did make a tackle.

While a member of the Texans for four seasons, Mitchell played in 63 games (17 starts) with four passes defensed, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, 3.5 sacks, 134 total tackles (81 solo), six tackles for loss and six QB hits.

Mitchell is a solid player to have in a defensive line rotation, and for the playoffs, that is how the 49ers have used him. It is always good to have a veteran in a defensive line rotation, especially in a game as big as the Super Bowl.

Though the Texans never quite made it to the Super Bowl with either one of the aforementioned players, these players still did some good things in their time with the franchise.

If fans need a cheering interest this Sunday, it would be tough to go wrong wishing for success for either Mathieu or Mitchell as they arrive and do their job on the football field to the best of their abilities.
