The Ugly

OK, at times in his career Ka’imi Fairbairn has been an excellent kicker for the Houston Texans, but on Sunday and in other games this season, his kicks have cost the Texans some easy points. That was the case against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Even though the Texans won the game by a 31-24 score — and there is the fact Fairbairn was 1-of-2 in field goal attempts and 2-of-3 in extra-point chances — in today’s NFL, that won’t cut it. Give credit to Fairbairn for making the 44-yard field goal, but he also cost the Texans four points that would have come in handy in this gam,e too.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle wrote the following in a recent article on Fairbairn as he was “rocky again” against the Chiefs:

"“This makes it four missed extra points for the season for Fairbairn and three missed extra points and one field goal over the past two games. … One year after leading the NFL in scoring and missing just two extra points, Fairbairn is struggling mightily and adapting to a new holder in punter Bryan Anger.”"

On the missed field goal, the laces weren’t pointing in the right direction and that will make changes in the kick, but this is pro football. Fairbairn and his holder can’t continue to let that happen, or the Texans could look elsewhere for a kicker.

Though the miscues in the kicking game didn’t cost the Texans the win this time around, next up is the Colts, and they are not a pushover by any means, so all points will matter.

Fairbairn and the special teams can’t give away points to the Colts on Sunday, because if they do, things could get ugly on the depth chart for not only Fairbairn, but the entire unit of special teams if more points are left off the board.
