27. DeMeco Ryans wins Rookie of the Year

The 2006 draft was all about the Houston Texans as they sat atop the league with the first overall selection. Controversially they choose Mario Williams, a defensive end from North Carolina State.

Williams was a good player and a great choice, but the buzz became all about their second round choice, DeMeco Ryans. The inside linebacker from Alabama was taken with the 33rd selection overall and became a star during his rookie season.

The 6’1”, 247 pound linebacker racked up an incredible 156 tackles as well as three and a half sacks. He also recorded one interception, a forced fumble and recovery as well as seven passes defended.

The well-rounded season earned Ryans the title of NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year ahead of players like Williams and Bush.
