Although the league’s market only opened on Tuesday, NFL.com has already listed the Houston Texans as losers of the free agency period.

In an article that appeared on NFL.com on Friday, Around The NFL Editor Gregg Rosenthal ranked the Texans as loser mainly for electing to release their aging star recevier and signing two unproven quarterbacks. Here’s Rosenthal full explanation:

"“Cutting Andre Johnson was tough for Texans fans to swallow. Watching him beat them at Lucas Oil Field as he finishes off his Hall of Fame career will be tougher. I liked the Rahim Moore signing, but it’s hard to get excited about a Ryan Mallett competition with Brian Hoyer.”"

One thing that the article does not consider is the Texans’ ability to retain their own key free agents. Houston has already re-signed cornerback Kareem Jackson, offensive tackle Derek Newton, wide recevier Damaris Johnson and Mallett.

And although Hoyer and Mallett aren’t big name signings, they were arguably the top quarterbacks available in free agency. To sign both is a big win for Houston, who desperately need to find themselves a franchise quarterback.

But the main point might be the fact that free agency is not even close to being over yet. And there are still plenty of impactful free agents available and time remaining that calling the Houston Texans, or any other NFL team for that matter, losers is quite premature.
