As expected, free agent free safety Ed Reed has remained totally quiet since flying home to Atlanta last Friday after a two day visit with the Houston Texans. So far this week we’ve heard only the negatives about Reed maybe accepting general manager Rick Smith’s $4 million offerto replace Glover Quin – but now, there’s some good news.

The Ravens are reportedly interested in fellow free agent Michael Huff, according to the Baltimore Sun. No date has been given just yet in terms of a meeting, but Aaron Wilson thinks the former Oakland Raider will visit within the next five days:

Ravens expected to meet with safety Michael Huff within the next five days, according to a league source.

— Aaron Wilson (@RavensInsider) March 20, 2013

If you’re wondering why the Texans should care, all of this points towards the Ravens weighing up their options in case Reed takes off. None of this is to say that’s a certainty – and it looks like the Patriots and 49ers are still going to take a shot – but with the Texans’ money on the table, it’s something to wonder.

As it looks right now, Reed isn’t going to give anyone a set answer anytime soon. He’s playing it cool like the Jets and Darelle Revis, except Reed believes he is still worth $6-7 million and a deal worth at least three or so years.

The Texans probably won’t offer Reed that. All they can offer is $4 million, a locker room pal in Andre Johnson, along with a pretty good defensive coordinator in Wade Phillips. If Reed takes too long though, and nothing becomes of Huff’s visit to Baltimore, his next stop could be Houston. Same goes for Charles Woodson or Kerry Rhodes.

The Houston Texans came back from an abysmal loss to the Green Bay Packers, with a blowout of their own against one of the league’s elite: the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens were able to force a three-and-out on the Texans first drive and kick a field goal on their own, after that it was all Texans. There is no better way to enter the bye than with a blowout win against a team like the Ravens.

The offense certainly did their part as they set the franchise-record for points scored, however the defense was stingy all day, and showed that last week against the Packers was nothing more than a bump in the road.

Oct 21, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans linebacker Connor Barwin (98) reacts after a tackle against the Baltimore Ravens in the second quarter at Reliant Stadium.
Front Seven

Unfortunately, it would appear that I jinxed J.J. Watt last week by saying that I wouldn’t discuss him until he got shut down. He was double-teamed for the entire game by two of the better offensive linemen in the NFL in Marshall Yanda and Michael Oher. He was still able to bat down two passes but it was the first time this season that he was held without a sack.

That was the lone dull spot on the defense. Whitney Mercilus racked up his first NFL sack, and Connor Barwin had his first this season on back-to-back plays resulting in a Ravens safety.

Most impressive, perhaps, was the fact that in the fourth quarter after a very questionable pass interference call on fourth down, Antonio Smith got his second sack of the year, and didn’t unsheathe the Ninja Assassin sword. On the next play however, he unsheathed it as he reached Joe Flacco for the second time in as many plays and racked up his third sack of the year.

Overall the front seven was an unstoppable force that helped lead the Texans to a much needed win.

Oct 21, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph (24) celebrates returning an interception for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens during the first half at Reliant Stadium.
Secondary

Johnathan Joseph had an interception that he returned for a touchdown, which was a sight for sore eyes as he was repeatedly torched for the last two weeks.

Kareem Jackson, who is the most improved player on the Texans roster, had another impressive game this week holding Anquan Boldin without a catch for a majority of the game.

Glover Quin Jr. Was the player of the game this week, at least on defense as he led the team in tackles with six, pass deflections with three, and had an acrobatic interception that was arguably the play of the game.

It was good to see a defensive secondary that had been destroyed last week come out and show that it was nothing more than a hiccough and that they were actually this good.

Special Teams

I can’t say enough for the special teams. Alan Ball has come over this year and along with Brian Braman, been our coverage team stud who consistently makes plays downing the ball inside the 10-yard line. Brian Braman makes big, but sure, hits on the return man on a regular basis, and while Jacoby Jones was able to break a few kick returns for decent gains, we didn’t give up a touchdown.

Donnie Jones punted five times with two downed inside the 20 and more importantly allowing only one to be returned for a mere one yard.

Finally, Shayne Graham continued to be almost automatic and went a solid 2-2 on field goals and 5-5 on extra points.

This was the most complete game the Texans have played this year and if they continue to hit on all cylinders like this then they will be unstoppable.

The defense certainly did it’s part, but we’ll focus mainly on the offense in the article, and how they dominated in every way from start to finish.

Oct 21, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub (8) celebrates a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth quarter at Reliant Stadium. The Texans defeated the Ravens 43-13. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

Matt Schaub

I said before the game that Schaub needed to step up and be the player he was against Denver, and he answered the call. His receivers bailed him out on more than one occasion, especially Garrett Graham on an overthrown pass that would have almost definitely have been an interception, but he was putting the ball where he wanted it all day.

He moved it around effectively finding Kevin Walter deep on three separate occasions and completing two of them, he found Owen Daniels for seven catches and Andre for eight catches.

Schaub’s numbers continue to be middle-of-the-road, but I would rather have a quarterback like Schaub in this offense, than someone like Tony Romo who will almost single-handedly win you games, but also lose you games. The term “game manager” is a dirty word to quarterbacks, and Schaub is not necessarily lumped into that category, but he is a guy that won’t make the dumb mistakes and for that reason I couldn’t be happier about the extension he just signed.

NamasTate

Arian Foster had 98 yards and two touchdowns, meaning he has scored at least one touchdown in every game this season and leads the league in rushing touchdowns on the year with 10. Ben Tate bounced back strong from his injury with 10 carries for 47 yards, but more importantly he showed the burst that Texan fans have become accustomed to seeing.

Justin Forsett came in for mop up duty again and again was too much for a tired defense leading the team in yards per carry on the day. With the three of these running backs on the roster the Texans have undoubtedly the best stable of backs in the NFL.

Whether you think it was the defense or Arian Foster that bounced back the strongest after getting completely embarrassed against the Packers, all that really matters is that both bounced back like champions.

Oct 21, 2012; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson (80) runs after a catch against the Baltimore Ravens during the first half at Reliant Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE

Receivers

As I said earlier the receivers were incredible. Andre Johnson looked like the Andre of old with no drops and nine catches on 10 targets. Kevin Walter was the surprise deep threat getting open three times down the field and scoring a touchdown.

Owen Daniels racked up seven catches and a score meaning that he is probably on his way to a Pro-Bowl season because he has been a nuisance for every defense they play.

Garrett Graham had the play of the week when Matt Schaub overthrew him and he tipped it away from the safety with one hand and caught it falling backwards.

Offensive Line

The faith in the line was restored on Sunday when they were able to hold the Ravens to two sacks on Schaub and help the running game rack up 181 yards on the ground.

The most interesting thing that the offensive line did all day was starting Ben Jones at right guard this week as opposed to the injured Antoine Caldwell

Overall it was the most complete win the Texans have had this year, and if they play like that every week then they will not lose a game for the remainder of the year.
