I wouldn’t be happy if the Houston Texans use a first round pick on Patrick Mahomes.

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report has released his latest NFL mock draft and he has the Houston Texans using the 25th overall pick on Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

WalterFootball.com has Mahomes as the third ranked quarterback in this year’s draft.

"Some team sources are intrigued by Mahomes, but others are skeptics. Mahomes has a good arm and has flashed the ability to be a pocket passer. He also has athleticism with functional mobility to buy time and pick up some yards on the ground. Mahomes is a sleeper who could be a steal. The big knock on Mahomes is his decision-making.One playoff team told me they have a second-round grade on Mahomes and compare him to Derek Carr coming out of Fresno State. Two other teams said they had Mahomes in the third round, while one playoff general manager said he had him in Round 4. There is love/hate with Mahomes in part because of his college offense, but Mahomes flashes the ability to be an accurate passer with a good arm, bulk, flashes of field vision, and mobility. The NFL Draft Advisory board gave him a second-round estimate."

While I’m all for the Texans using their first round pick on a quarterback this year, I can’t help but think that trading away the pick instead for Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would make more sense.

Yes, we don’t really know how good Garoppolo will be within the next few years, but he proved that he can run the Patriots complex offense and run it well enough to win some games against some pretty good opponents last season.

At the end of the day, I’d rather go with Garoppolo than a quarterback like Mahomes who’s been running more of gimmick offense at Texas Tech.
