DeMeco Ryans lands coaching job with 49ers
DeMeco Ryans is starting a new career in the NFL.
Now that former Houston Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans hasn’t played a snap since his time with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015, he’s decided to give coaching a try.
It was reported on Tuesday that Ryans has been hired by the San Francisco 49ers as their new defensive quality control coach.
Ryans was selected by the Texans in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. He was also named the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and was selected to two Pro Bowls during his career.

Ryans played with the Texans until 2011. He was then traded to the Eagles during the 2012 NFL offseason after Brian Cushing replaced him as the starting middle linebacker. Philly sent a third and fourth round pick to Houston in exchange for Ryans and a third round pick.
Ryans ended up suffering an Achilles injury in November of 2014 and never rebounded. He was then released by the Eagles in February of 2016.
Ryans finished his career with 939 total tackles, 13.5 sacks, seven interceptions, six forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries and one touchdown.
Whenever a former player is transitioning to a job in coaching, they typically start out as a quality control coach. The job entails preparing film and doing other things to help the defensive coaches in Ryan’s case.
