Introducing Tom Savage, backup quarterback for your Houston Texans. With the demise of Ryan Mallett’s season due to an chest injury presumed to be a torn muscle the Texans tapped Fitzpatrick as the starter again. Savage, stepped into the role of back up this week as the Texans prepare to take on the Tennessee Titans. Savage’s backup is another Buffalo Bills former quarterback, Thad Lewis. The Texans are hoping that Fitzpatrick can find a way to beat the Titans and keep the slim hopes of a playoff berth alive.

This of course means another game with the now trimmed, bearded one. The Texans will have the services of Arian Foster, however Jadeveon Clowney appears to be headed for the inactive list. Hopefully this week he stays off social media during the game. Foster is ready to go, Clowney is down. A fair trade indeed. Clowney is still suffering from pain and swelling from his meniscus tear at the start of the year. He’s failed to play productively and has been a non factor so far in the 2014 campaign. While I understand the Texans want to keep options open, perhaps setting him on IR now, putting him on a path to a full recovery for next season is the best course of action.

No one wants to admit defeat, obviously not before a winnable game but the Colts are 2 games up, 5 games left. That means they will have to drop 3 of their next 5 including hosting the Texans. The wold card path equally as unlikely as there are 11 teams with better records out there. Obviously some of those are not going to make the play offs but let’s be honest here neither are the Texans. After Sunday the Texans will have to shift into a “prepare for 2015” mindset instead of “maybe we can make the playoffs” that they are in now.

It’s been a tough year for the fans so far, for the team. Hopes of turning around the 2-14 2013 have been achieved, though not to the level anyone is happy with. The Texans at best can finish 10-6 right now but with tough games against Baltimore and Indy on tap the more likely final is 8-8. It’s week 13, Texans host the Titans, and now we play for pride, for draft position, for the future. Is Tom Savage that future? Probably not going to learn that this week. This week he’s the guy with the clipboard. Perhaps next week.
