Texans, Titans. A rivalry between two teams that share a city in their history have their first match up of the 2014 season. The Texans have the better record but really not much separates the two teams in terms of play so far this season. The Texans have lost key players and their draft picks have yet to make a meaningful impact. The Titans are turning to their 6th round choice of Zach Mettenberger to lead their offense. They haven’t performed well and hope, like the Texans last season that bringing in a new QB might spark the offense.
Mettenberger played his final two seasons at LSU and set many a passing record for the school throwing for over 2,500 yards. He suffered a torn ACL in the final game of the season but was back up and running a mere 13 weeks later for the LSU Pro Day. He’ll get to say hi to an old friend, Alfred Blue, a former LSU Tiger now playing back up to Arian Foster. Mettenberger is a far different cat then Jake Locker or Charlie Whitehurst. He’s a gun slinger, and not afraid to stretch the field. Look for the Titans to challenge the Texans sketchy secondary a time or two.

The Texans Brian Cushing hasn’t been playing as were used to seeing him on the field. Unfortunately his twice reconstructed knee is the culprit and his ability to play hampered. While he will travel to Tennessee with the team he’s as likely to play as he is to be in street clothes. This is a set back, but not one that was entirely unexpected. Coming back once from a blown knee is impressive, a second time well he has to work through it. Tuggle and Mohammed will really have to step up their game replacing him against the run.
Fortunately, for the Texans at least, the 2014 number one draft pick will be on the field in limited play trying to spoil Metternberger’s first day on the job. Expect the Texans to use Clowney mostly in passing situations and the Titans to be wary anytime he reaches for his helmet. This game will either tie the two teams or breath life back into the Texans season keeping them only a game back behind the Colts in the AFC South. It’ll be an exciting if ugly match up between the two teams as each try to solve their offenses woes.
