Houston Chronicle Houston Texans reporter John McClain has a great appetite for sports, and especially the NFL, as he’s covered the sport for over 30 years.
Earlier this year, before the 2014 NFL Draft, McClain said the he was basically so confident that the Texans would select a quarterback in the first round he said he would eat the front page of the Houston Chronicle sports section if they didn’t.
Thursday, May 8 rolled around (the first round of the NFL Draft) and the Texans selected defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) with the No. 1 overall selection, and that was the only player they defeated in the first round.
The Texans didn’t draft a quarterback until the fourth round, selecting Tom Savage of Pittsburgh.
So, that meant McClain would actually “eat his own words” and find out exactly how tasty the the Chronicle really is.
He lived up to his words … and ate them.
McClain a plaque in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after winning the 2006 Dick McCann Memorial Award for long and distinguished reporting on the NFL (as provided from his Chronicle bio page), as he has also covered the Houston Oilers and the NFL in general for the Houston Chronicle.
