The Cincinnati Bengals announced the signing of former Houston Texans linebacker Sam Montgomery, Friday morning.
If you remember, Montgomery was released by the Texans this past season due to rule infractions.
An article on Pro Football Talks states:
“A third-round pick of the Texans in 2013, Montgomery was waived by Houston in October after allegedly violating club rules. His agent has denied the violation was in connection with marijuana use. Montgomery also was said to have been out of shape entering training camp.”
Montgomery was an All-American at LSU.
This could be a good signing for the Bengals, because if Montgomery returns to the NFL with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove … well, it could be a big loss for the Texans.
Montgomery has talent, as he was an All-American and a third-round selection by the Texans in ’13, but I guess it is safe to say and to ask: how bad does he want to succeed in the NFL?
Based on the report he was out of shape entering training camp last year, that makes me at least wonder how much he wants it.
I hope the best for Montgomery, because maybe the Texans jumped the gun in releasing him last season, but everyone deserves a second chance, and I hope he makes the best of it with the Bengals.
