Bucky Brooks put together an awesome piece on Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips yesterday. Phillips transformed the Texans defense to one of the best defenses in the league after one season of work.
If you all didn’t know, I am a Chargers fan that is just filling in on this site until we can find someone to grab hold of it. I only started yesterday and have a successful Chargers blog as part of the FanSided network.
But as a Chargers fan, I have had plenty of experience with Wade Phillips and know what his presence can do for a defense. While he was running the defense in San Diego, he had players like Shawne Merriman, Shawn Phillips and Jamal Williams. Ever since he skipped town to try and become a head coach in Dallas, the defense has lacked that intensity. Shawne Merriman has never been the same player since he left either (injuries and steroids could play a part in that as well).
With Wade Phillips running the defense, pressure on the quarterback was always a top priority. Opposing quarterbacks could not get comfortable and that always led to big plays on the field.
With the Texans, Phillips has a lot of players that he can use to get after the quarterback and the transformation was seen last season. When Phillips was available last season, I was hoping that the Chargers would go after him and team him up with Norv Turner. It would have been an awesome combination, but the Texans stole him and now you guys see the benefits of his defensive scheme.
