UPDATE: Texans coach Gary Kubiak said after practice today that DeMeco Ryans, Antonio Smith & Andre Johnson have restructured their contracts.
Yesterday, the NFL sent out an email to all 32 teams telling them the league year should start at 4 pm on Thursday. Free agent signees will then be allowed to begin to practice with teams which is good news. The not so good news is that the hometown Texans are $8.5M over the salary cap and need to be compliant by the start of the new league year.
There are rumors that a 24 hour extension will be given to teams that are over the cap so that they may reach compliance. Nonetheless expect general manager Rick Smith and vice president of football operations Chris Olsen will be working overtime again to redo contracts.
The Texans are one of seven teams expected to utilize the 24 hour extension. In order to redo a player contract or two along with a possible cut or two although player cuts are unlikely. It’s hard to fathom that the Texans are $8.5M over the cap while a “Dream Team” such as the Philadelphia Ego’s are sitting pretty within the confines of the the soft $120M cap. But as you all no I’m definitely no capologist.
